The Birth of Entrepreneurship!

This recession has been tough on a lot of people. Many have lost their jobs, had their wages cut, or even lost their homes. Some, however, have decided to take the blows life has thrown at them and do things they never dreamed they would be able to do: start their own business. That's where Richard comes in. Richard is an old next door neighbor. Since we met, we hit it off immediately. Having been let go from the construction industry, one of the hardest hit by the recession, Richard decided to start his own business: a carpet cleaning company. We got together with the families one night over a burger and beer at McMenamin's and talked about his goals and ideas for a logo. Naturally, I had to help out a friend. I developed a classic looking, yet professional logo that would look perfect on his van. There's a ton more work to do, but this is a great start!

Management, Operations, Sales

These logos were part of a series I created a few years ago for a management training workbook. They are meant to convey the three paths one can take through the program: Management, Operations, and Sales.

Help for Holiday Logo

Here's the situation, as described by my client, the Tualatin-Tigard Family Resource Center:

"I just returned from a meeting with community partners in Washington County regarding coordination of the holiday assistance program. (Toys and food for families in need) We would like to really join forces this year and collaborate on one single unified assistance program. A part of that means using common language for the program and having a logo to use for all printed material regarding the program. You did such a fabulous job with our logo that I instantly thought of you.

We are thinking of something simple in black and white that would be easy to photocopy. Let me know if you would be interested in volunteering for this project. We would be working on a tighter time line - possibly several weeks - since we are eager to get publicity materials out as soon as possible. But we also wouldn't be sending so many drafts back to you for tweaking, so it would be doable in that time frame. I know you are busy with a young family, and I understand if this is too much for you to take on at this time. But if you are interested, we would LOVE to have you do this project. Let me know what you think as soon as possible."

The trick was that the logo HAD to be in black and white for reproduction purposes, and it had to be holiday-neutral, as the program does not want to exclude anyone. I chose bold, defined shapes that would photo copy well. I'll keep you posted on what they pick!

We Are Go For Launch!

For those of you who don't know, according to the State of Oregon I now officially have my own business! Ok, before you freak out and think I put up the house as collateral: A.) We don't own a house and B.) I am simply doing freelance graphic design work on top of my full-time job as a commercial print sales rep. It's the perfect combination: providing graphic design solutions and then having the resources to get it printed!
I swung my very first project a few weeks ago. I was meeting with a client for printing purposes and he mentioned that he had a tradeshow coming up in a few weeks. He asked if my printing company offered design services, to which I replied, "No, but I sure do!"
This is something I am very passionate about. I have enjoyed learning all about the printing industry, but my creative side has definitely been stifled over the years. Now I have an outlet for my creativity without going to the poorhouse.
There will definitely be some challenges along the way. For example: what if I get offered a really great design project but they have their own printing company that they work with? I will design the project but will be unable to handle the production of it as that would be a conflict of interest with my printing company. Also, what if there is a really great project, but it needs to be done quickly and during business hours? This is something I will have to explain to my clients up front. So, needless to say, this portion of my life will be minimal at best, but it will certainly be a great outlet and a nice way to earn some extra cash. Check out the site when you get a chance, I just finished it!

I'm taking votes!

That's right...I need your help! I want to know what the logos make you think, how they make you feel. Your input is appreciated!

Enrich Design

So I've been thinking more and more about doing graphic design again as a side thing. Of course, one of the most important elements is coming up with a logo. It represents who you are, your personal brand. The name is taken after my last name, Richardson. And, well, for those of you who know me, you know where the german shepherd comes from: my dog Billie. I'm still debating whether or not to include the dog. We will see!
