For those of you who don't know, according to the State of Oregon I now officially have my own business! Ok, before you freak out and think I put up the house as collateral: A.) We don't own a house and B.) I am simply doing freelance graphic design work on top of my full-time job as a commercial print sales rep. It's the perfect combination: providing graphic design solutions and then having the resources to get it printed!
I swung my very first project a few weeks ago. I was meeting with a client for printing purposes and he mentioned that he had a tradeshow coming up in a few weeks. He asked if my printing company offered design services, to which I replied, "No, but I sure do!"
This is something I am very passionate about. I have enjoyed learning all about the printing industry, but my creative side has definitely been stifled over the years. Now I have an outlet for my creativity without going to the poorhouse.
There will definitely be some challenges along the way. For example: what if I get offered a really great design project but they have their own printing company that they work with? I will design the project but will be unable to handle the production of it as that would be a conflict of interest with my printing company. Also, what if there is a really great project, but it needs to be done quickly and during business hours? This is something I will have to explain to my clients up front. So, needless to say, this portion of my life will be minimal at best, but it will certainly be a great outlet and a nice way to earn some extra cash.
